1. Alice Holt Forest

Based in Farnham, just a short drive from here at LITH-TECH, Alice Holt Forest is the perfect place to enjoy the peace and quiet that nature has to offer. With over 610 acres of woodland, this royal forest, once used to supply timber for the Royal Navy, has a rich history and its beauty has been well-preserved over the years.

There is something for everyone at Alice Holt. It’s free to visit and boasts great accessibility. So, whether it’s to watch wildlife, enjoy the fresh air or to spot the popular Gruffalo sculptures for the little ones, you’ll find something for everyone.

Perfect for wheelchair users, there is an Easy Access Discovery Trail. You’ll find wooden posts with symbols, along with a leaflet, to guide you through the accessible trail. This trail even has an optional shortcut if you want to spend a little less time, so you can really make this trip work for your individual needs.

2. Polesden Lacey

An Edwardian country house located in the Surrey hills, Polesden Lacey boasts a rich history, beautiful walled gardens, and acres of land overlooking the Surrey hills.

Only four miles from Dorking with easy access from the M25, this National Trust property is family-friendly and wonderful to visit all year round – whether it’s to enjoy the garden in the summer or the beautiful Christmas light displays in the winter.

Whilst access is only given to the ground floor of the house, there is plenty to see, from the grand Central Hall to the Dining Room, and the upstairs is often closed for preservation.

There is some gravel to traverse in the grounds, but you can request a wheelchair accessible map upon entry to get the very most out of the beautiful grounds safely.

National trust members enter for free with a standard adult ticket costing £14. However, there are a variety of ticket combinations available if you’re visiting with family.

3. RHS Wisley Garden

RHS Garden Wisley in Surrey

Discover the beautiful gardens of Wisley from the Royal Horticultural Society. Located just off of the A3 in Woking with easy transport links, Wisley Garden provides outstanding beauty and a great accessible experience for all.

With a recommended wheelchair route throughout the gardens, visitors can feel comfortable whilst taking in the beautiful sights of the mixed borders, The Glasshouse, and the iconic Jellicoe Canal to name a few.

Please note that some gardens, such as the Rock Garden, are not fully accessible via wheelchair due to the nature of the garden. But with 240 acres to explore, the wheelchair access route offers plenty of beautiful sights to see.

4. Hampton Court Palace

Home to Henry VIII, his six wives and children, Hampton Court Palace has a rich history on offer. This iconic palace located in Kingston is a great day out for all the family, from history fanatics to garden seekers, and offers many accessible features.

Despite the age of this iconic Tudor palace (over 500 years old!), Hampton Court is wheelchair-friendly. Whilst there are some small doors and uneven surfaces to be aware of, there is level access to Henry VIII’s Apartments, Henry VIII’s Kitchens, William III’s Apartments, and the Formal Gardens to name a few.

5. Bocketts Farm

Located in Leatherhead, Bocketts Farm is the perfect family day trip in the stunning Surrey countryside. This working family farm holds host to many activities, from getting close to sheep in The Animal Discovery Barn to watching the famous Pig Race.

Bocketts Farm is wheelchair-accessible for all, with wide, flat access areas to the main barns and animal barns. The tractor and trailer ride is also accessible for wheelchair users, so you can really make the most out of your visit!

6. Painshill Park

Discover the beauty of Painshill Park, located in Cobham. With beautiful follies, incredible views across the Serpentine Lake and garden heritage around every corner, this 18th century garden offers so much to explore.

Painshill Park has great accessibility options, with a large print map available, free admission for carers and an accessible route around the landscape garden.

Whilst there may not be full access to every element of the garden due to tricky terrain, there is still so much to see. With access to the Crystal Grotto and the awe-inspiring manmade cave, this day out is sure to be a memorable one.

7. Denbies Wine Estate

Surrey is home to the largest vineyard in England and one of the largest wine producers in the UK, Denbies Wine Estate, located in the heart of Dorking. From tours of the great vineyards to wine tasting and your pick of three restaurants, Denbies makes for a great day out for adults.

There is a fee for the different experiences on offer, but Denbies Wine Estate offers exceptional accessibility for wheelchair users. If you want to experience the outdoor vineyard, all you have to do is call in advance and everything will be in place!
