Throughout my career, I’ve had the opportunity to speak with thousands of families looking for the right mobility solution. While every family’s circumstances are different, one challenge has remained consistent.

There has never been a truly purpose-built kids electric wheelchair that balances portability, safety, practicality and everyday usability without compromise.

For years, parents have often found themselves choosing between adapted adult wheelchairs, heavy-duty powered chairs or ultra-lightweight or self propel alternatives that prioritise low weight over stability and long-term durability. None of those options felt like the right answer.

That gap in the market became the starting point for the Lith-Tech Mini.

Rather than adapting an existing product, we set out to develop a children’s electric wheelchair from the ground up one that was designed specifically for children, teenagers and smaller adults, while drawing upon everything we’ve learnt through years of designing powered mobility solutions.

Identifying a Gap in the Market

At Lith-Tech, we believe mobility products should be designed around the person using them, not the other way around.

As our range of electric wheelchairs has evolved, we’ve continually refined every model through customer feedback and real-world experience. When we turned our attention to the children’s market, it quickly became clear that many products had simply just adapted adult chairs and there was nothing actually dedicated or purpose built for a child. While those solutions undoubtedly work for some users, we believed there was an opportunity to create something better.

A children’s wheelchair should reflect the way young people actually live.

It needs to navigate school corridors with ease, fit comfortably around classroom furniture, travel effortlessly in the family car and remain practical enough for holidays, days out and everyday “adventures”. Most importantly, it should inspire confidence for both the child using it and the parents supporting them.

Why Stability Matters More Than Chasing the Lowest Weight

One of the biggest misconceptions within the mobility industry is that lighter always means better.

Weight is undoubtedly important, particularly when parents are lifting a wheelchair into the boot of a car, but it should never come at the expense of safety and stability.

Children use their wheelchairs differently to most adults. They’re navigating parks, school playgrounds, uneven paths and busy environments. Their chair needs to feel planted, secure and capable across a wide range of situations.

That’s why we chose to build the Lith-Tech Mini using Aerospace Aluminium rather than pursuing an ultra-light carbon fibre design.

At just 18.5kg without the batteries, the chair remains exceptionally lightweight and easy to transport thanks to its compact footprint, yet it retains the reassuring stability and robustness that families expect from a product they’ll rely on every day.

For us, thoughtful and practical engineering has always been more important than chasing specifications on paper.

Designed Around Everyday Family Life

When families speak to us, the questions they ask are rarely about technical specifications. Instead, they want to know whether the chair will fit into their daily lives.

“Can it be lifted into the car without difficulty?”

“Will it manoeuvre comfortably around school?”

“Is it practical for holidays abroad?”

“Can it become the one chair that supports every aspect of family life?”

These were the questions we considered throughout the design and build process.

The Lith-Tech Mini folds down in seconds into an incredibly compact package, making transportation and storage straightforward. Its twin quick-release batteries are airline-friendly on every airline worldwide, allowing families to travel abroad on their family holidays, while its compact dimensions make it equally comfortable navigating classrooms, restaurants, shopping centres and other everyday spaces.

Every Child Deserves an Individual Solution

No two children have the same mobility requirements, confidence/skill levels or lifestyles.

That is why we’ve never believed in a one-size-fits-all approach to powered mobility.

Every Lith-Tech wheelchair can be programmed to suit the individual user. Acceleration, steering sensitivity and overall responsiveness can all be adjusted to create a driving experience that reflects each child’s abilities and confidence.

For some users, that means gentle, predictable controls that build confidence over time. For others, it means a more responsive setup that reflects their independence.

The Importance of Specialist Advice

One piece of advice I always offer families searching for a children’s electric wheelchair is to speak with a specialist before making any decision.

The mobility market is incredibly diverse, and every individual has unique requirements. The right solution isn’t simply the lightest chair or the newest product, it’s the chair that best supports that person’s lifestyle, environment and long-term needs.

For me, the Lith-Tech Mini reflects years of listening to families, learning from customers and continually asking how we can improve the products we design.

Our ambition was never simply to build another kids electric wheelchair. It was to create a purpose-built mobility solution that gives children greater independence while giving parents confidence that the chair is safe, practical and designed to meet the demands of everyday life.

If we can make school easier, family holidays more accessible, or simply help a child enjoy a greater sense of freedom and independence, then we’ve achieved exactly what we set out to do.
