Toby’s Workshop Advice: The Practical Stuff Most People Miss

1. Tightening Bolts is More Important Than Most Users Realise

Electric folding wheelchairs are low-maintenance, but vibrations from everyday surfaces such as kerbs, cobbles and gravel gradually loosen bolts over time.

Toby recommends checking and tightening all key bolts every 3-4 months.

If you leave them for too long, the chair can begin to feel unstable and in the worst cases, become unsafe.

2. Tools Matter More Than You Think

Lith-Tech uses and recommends:

• A multi-spanner
• A set of matching Allen keys (same size both sides)

Using the wrong size risks rounding bolt heads, which often requires full part replacement.

3. Critical Safety Check: Your Front Forks

One of the most dangerous issues Toby sees is loose front forks. If the forks wobble, even slightly, the wheelchair becomes unsafe on kerbs and slopes.

Users must check fork bolts regularly and tighten immediately if there is any play or movement.

4. Most “Faults” Are Just Loose Electrical Cables

Toby sees this constantly in customer calls. Before assuming you’ve got a fault:

• Ensure the white arrows on connectors are aligned
• Push connectors fully in
• Twist to lock them
• Make sure rubber hoods are in place

Lithium batteries are the heart of your electric wheelchair. Toby explains that poor battery habits drastically shorten their lifespan.

• Charge at least once a month if not in use. This prevents lithium cells from losing memory.
• Give batteries occasional use. Lithium cells hate sitting idle.
• Do NOT drain batteries completely. Letting the chair “die” is damaging to the battery.
• Avoid unnecessary daily top-ups. This is called trickle charging and wastes charge cycles. Quality lithium batteries have around 1000 charge cycles, so save them for when they’re needed.
• Never leave the chair on charge constantly. This is unsafe and damages batteries
• Avoid extreme hot or cold environments do not leave batteries:
  • In hot cars or direct summer sunlight
  • In cold garages or cars below 0°C. If temperatures drop below freezing, bring batteries indoors.
